Pens Win! Pens Win!

Remember tonight, Penguins fans. Remember tonight. If the Penguins do turn around their season, tonight will be remembered as the turning point.

The Ottawa Senators, 16-4 through the first quarter of the season, are a well oiled hockey machine. The game was in Ottawa, on Thanksgiving. Given that the Penguins have lost seven out of the last eight games, tonight could’ve been the disaster to end all disasters. It could’ve been a 10-0 trouncing that would’ve made Penguins fan jump off bridges and choke on cold turkey.

The Penguins would not say die this evening. After the third and fourth lines came out in total shock and awe mode, the Penguins found themselves down 2-0, a fate not fitting their actual game play this evening, but one that is not surprising considering the way their season has gone so far.

This would be a time for the Pens to roll over and die, to let the Senators take over the game, take the easy loss and go home.

Geno the Machino said no. On a Lemieux-esque highlight reel goal, Malkin cut the Senators lead in half. Ryan Malone soon tied it up.

It was all knotted up at the beginning of the second period. Then the youngster, Tyler Kennedy, or as he’s known in the Kennedy clan, Ty-Ty, put the Penguins ahead, 3-2.

Disaster struck once again. The Senators rattled off two goals in the second and one more in the third.

Stop the presses, Ryan Malone comes up huge, as he has been. Malone is finally starting to play the consistant physical hockey that the organization has wanted him to play for years.

Gonchar pinches and scores the tying goal 1:11 later.

Two times tonight the Penguins came back from being down two goals. The Penguins never said die, much like the Penguins of last season.

The questions:

Has the organization lost some faith in Marc-Andre Fleury? Coach Michel Therrien pulled MAF after the second goal and back up Dany Sabourin made key saves down the stretch to keep the Pens in the game. Who starts against the Thrashers on Saturday?

Is this the final curtain call for Recchi and Sydor? After the game Ty-Ty had, as well as a resurgant Colby Armstrong, where does Recchi fit in the lineup now? Michel Therrien will have some hard questions to answer if Recchi dresses on Saturday.  Kris Letang is playing far too well for Sydor to crack the starting roster.

How awesome is Evgeni Malkin? Too awesome for words. The kind of hockey this guy is playing right now is top level. He gets lost sometimes in the Crosby show, but right now, he is one of the top five players in the league.

So Saturday is coming soon, but cherish this feeling.  This was one for the ages.
